Romans, sprookjes, sciencefiction en griezelverhalen hebben allemaal één ding gemeen voor hun lezers, je wordt meegenomen naar een andere wereld. Je maakt kennis met allerlei fictieve personages die van alles beleven, ze slepen je mee in hun avonturen of belevingswereld. Maar hoe werkt zo'n identificatie precies voor meisjes? Volgens een gangbare leestheorie vereenzelvigen wij ons meestal met het hoofdpersonage van een boek. Als je meisjes wil emanciperen, laat ze dan een boek lezen met sterke, competente meisjes/vrouwen als hoofdpersonage zou je hieruit kunnen concluderen. In dit boek wordt deze stelling nader bekeken. De auteur ondervroeg meisjes van 8-16 jaar naar hun leesgedrag. Meisjes identificeren zich met verschillende personages en niet enkel met de vrouwelijke. Het leesplezier is juist de ervaring om het verhaal vanuit verschillende invalshoeken te lezen. Meisjes lezen in de eerste plaats een goed verteld verhaal. Verhalen die weinig of niets met hun eigen leven te maken hebben genieten de voorkeur.

De laatste jaren maakte men zich zorgen over het leesgedrag van jongeren. Lezen ze nog wel? Jawel er wordt door onze jeugd nog volop gelezen, zo blijkt uit onderzoeken. Anders dan vroeger neemt het lezen van het computerscherm toe. Niet veranderd zijn de verschillen in leesgedrag tussen jongens en meisjes. Deze laatsten lezen niet alleen meer dan de jongens maar zij kiezen ook voor andere boeken. Het Tilburgse symposium over lezen, jeugdliteratuur en leesonderwijs besloot voor haar vijfentwintigste editie het verschil in leesgedrag tussen meisjes en jongens als thema te nemen. Verschillende vragen werden opgeworpen: waar komen die leesverschillen vandaan? Zijn ze aangeboren of aangeleerd? Wanneer ontstaan deze verschillen? Natuurlijk de belangrijkste vraag: hoe kan hieraan verholpen worden? Al deze vragen worden meegenomen in de verschillende bijdragen van het symposium die in deze uitgave gebundeld zijn.
